Dr Will Rickard, Department of Physics and Astronomy & John de Laeter Centre, Curtin University, Perth, Western Australia
Will is a materials scientist with an applied physics background. His research has been concentrated on studying the changes in microstructure, phase and physical properties of complex materials as they are exposed to elevated temperatures. More recently his research has been focused on the microstructure and chemical distribution of various geologically important minerals.
Will has extensive experience in materials characterisation and microanalysis as well as an advanced understanding of the fundamental principles behind electron and ion beam microscopes. He has expertise in numerous microscopy and related techniques (SEM, FIB-SEM, ToF-SIMS, APT, TEM, EDS, EBSD, TKD, FIB- & e-tomography, XRD, XRF). Over the last 8 years he has been concentrated on using FIB-SEM's to extract detailed information on a wide range of materials.
Will completed his PhD in 2011 at Curtin University and has worked as a postdoc in the Centre for Materials Research and later the John de Later Centre. He has spent time working at the German Federal Institute for Materials Research and Testing as well as the Korean Institute for Geoscience and Mineral Resources. From 2014 to early-2016 he was the Science Leader for the Microscopy & Microanalysis Facility. He is currently working as a Senior Research Fellow in the Advanced Resource Characterisation Facility as the Facility Manager for the Tescan Lyra FIB-SEM.
